Connection to Country

We acknowledge Boxing Book as the original author of this photograph

"My name is a Marissa Williamson Pohlman. I am a proud Ngarrindjeri woman with strong family connections to Yidinji, Quandamooka and Wurundjeri Woiwurrung.
I am thankful to live, work and train on the ancestral homelands of the Wurundjeri Woiwurrung people of the Kulin nation, and as we begin this learning, I would like to pay my respects to elders past and present.
I am thankful for the Victorian Aboriginal community that have done so much for me and have empowered me to thrive in the sport of boxing.
I pay my respects to First Nations people across Australia and world wide, their culture, community and country.
I would like to acknowledge the First Nations athletes, coaches and administrators that have come before me and have paved the way for me as an Aboriginal sports person.
I acknowledge the challenges that come with being a First Nations athlete and honour those who have persevered and gone on to achieve great things in their sport.
Sovereignty over these lands have never been ceded, this was and always will be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander country."

Connection to Country & Culture statement

From athletes to athletes

As we learn from our past to progress the future of Australian High Performance Sport, we commit to enhancing meaningful connections with and amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, communities, culture and country.

We commit to fostering an environment that enables First Nations athletes, coaches and

administrators to thrive and be supported by their non-Indigenous counterparts in culturally safe ways.

As a diverse and inclusive Australian sporting community, we commit to:

working together, walking together, aspiring together + achieving together.

Australia is made up of over 250 tribal nations each with their own identity and culture. We acknowledge the complexities experienced by some First Nations athletes, coaches and administrators walking the cross-cultural interface and endeavour to better understand and support them.

Through our Connection to Country and Culture, we commit to honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ unique connection to the land, waterways and seas. We acknowledge the stories and accolades of First Nations athletes, who have contributed to Australia's deep sporting history.

We recognise the outstanding contribution First People have made and continue to make to sport in Australia and celebrate the power of sport to promote reconciliation and reduce inequality.

As a High Performance Sporting System, we commit to creating a sporting nation and a sporting culture, free from discrimination of any kind.
