Athlete stories

Delivering foundational wellbeing education to Australian athletes on their journey towards high performance.

Listen to Olympians and Paralympians share their stories about wellbeing and engagement in sport.

Gabriella Palm – (Water Polo Australia)

Gabi shares why wellbeing is the key to her sporting success.

“Well-being is the key to my success. I really try and be well-rounded in everything that I do. That's why I really try and balance my well-being, my commitments with Elite Sport, as well as my engagement with activities outside of sport”.

Alyce Wood - (Paddle Australia)

Alyce shares why wellbeing is important as an Olympic athlete.

“For me athlete wellbeing and engagement is really important because I love having a balance between sport and life. Say for instance you have a really bad morning at training, like we all have, I love being able to go home and put a different hat on and focus on something different during the day and not overthink my training or racing performances inside out”.

Zac Stubblety-Cook – (Swimming Australia)

Zac shares why self-care is important to his Olympic success.

“Self-care is really important to me, because my philosophy on life is that you are a person before you're an athlete. So getting the best out of myself in the pool and outside and in the broader life is all about being the best person I can be”

Alisha Stevens – (Volleyball Australia)

Alisha shares the importance of balancing sporting and other commitments.

“I know that my athlete life isn't going to last forever. I work part-time and I study part-time all whilst I'm competing. I study a bachelor of nursing to build my future beyond sport”.

Isis Holt – (Para-Athletics)

Isis shares why having avenues outside of sport are important for Paralympic success.

“For me being an elite athlete means so much more than just training. It's so important to me to have avenues outside of sport that are meaningful. I'm currently studying psychology at University and I have a really fantastic support team outside of sport that ensure that I have that really nice life balance. This allows me to release the pressure of training and really focus on what I want to do”.

Logan Martin – (Aus Cycling or BMX Australia)

Logan shares why being a Gold medal BMX Olympian is about more than just riding his bike.

“Being in the lead athlete is about more than just riding my bike. I spend a lot of time trying to stay fit and healthy. I focus on my nutrition when I'm off the bike, I spend a lot of time in the gym to stay strong and when I'm not doing that stuff I'm focusing on fulfilling my sponsorship commitments”.

Kai Tandler – (Surfing Australia)

Kai shares how he is developing himself professionally in addition to surfing at the highest level.

“For me professional development as an athlete is really important as it provides me challenges outside of my sport. I'm studying a Bachelor of mechatronic engineering at University and I find that this makes me a more well-rounded person and that it's going to offer me a career path after my sporting career”.
