Ms Sukkar commenced as Chair of the ASC in February 2021 and has overseen a range of significant appointments and strategic announcements over the past three years.

During Ms Sukkar’s term, the sports system has become more aligned than ever before with the ASC leading the development of sector-wide strategies for both high performance and participation sport that will be critical roadmaps to Brisbane 2032 and beyond.

Ms Sukkar’s tenure also saw the ASC Board formally apologise to former athletes who were treated inappropriately and the establishment of the ASC Restorative Program in 2022.

Ms Sukkar said it’s been a privilege to play a leadership role in such an exciting time.

“I’ve been fortunate to lead the Commission for three years and I feel that the time is right for a new Chair to come in and continue to drive Australian sport forward,” Ms Sukkar said.

“Sport is full of incredibly committed and passionate people and I’m extremely grateful to the sports sector for the way they’ve come behind the ASC to deliver the whole of sector Win Well and Play Well strategies.

“I look forward to seeing the Australian Government continue to invest in and support the sector and these two critical strategies as we move towards Brisbane 2032.”

Australian Sports Commission CEO Kieren Perkins OAM praised Ms Sukkar for her stewardship.

“Despite a raft of challenges during her tenure, Josephine has demonstrated tremendous leadership of the Australian Sports Commission and the sector more broadly,” Mr Perkins said.

“Josephine’s extensive corporate acumen has ensured Australian sport has a clear direction and strategic approach as we continue on through the Green and Gold decade.

“Personally, I’d like to thank Josephine for the unwavering support she’s given me, the ASC Board and the executive team. I look forward to welcoming a new Chair in the coming months.”

Minister for Sport, the Hon Anika Wells, thanked Ms Sukkar for her service.

“On behalf of the Australian Government, I’d like to thank Josephine for her commitment to Australian sport over many years but particularly over the past three years as Chair of the Australian Sports Commission,” Minister Wells said.

“Her impact on the sector will be felt for years to come and I would like to wish her well for her future endeavours.”

Ms Sukkar will remain in the role to ensure a smooth transition to the incoming Chair with a date for her departure to be confirmed.
