Sport Categorisation

A national framework to identify sport programs most likely to contribute to Australia’s high performance targets.

Sport Categorisation includes three levels that are ranked primarily on past performance and future potential criterion at international benchmark events. Every two years sport programs are reviewed by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and the National Institute Network (NIN) partners against this criterion and categorised accordingly.

2 Sports that are on the Commonwealth Games schedule only and do not have an Olympic/Paralympic profile, or those sports that are on the Olympic/Paralympic and Commonwealth Games schedule with a high probability to win a gold medal at the next Commonwealth Games but are not considered to be a medal prospect within the next two cycles at the Olympic/Paralympic Games.

3 Sports that are supported for Commonwealth Games outcomes, however may also be eligible to participate in the Olympics/Paralympics.
